Start with the star: choosing and placing your Ganesha idol
The idol is the centrepiece — everything else simply frames it, so choose it first. Size it to your space: a 5–6 inch murti is perfect for a flat or apartment mandap, while an 8–12 inch idol suits a hall or a larger family setup. Direction matters. Set the mandap along the east or north-east wall, with Ganesha facing west or north, so the family faces east or north while praying. Avoid the south wall, spaces under a staircase, and anywhere next to a bathroom. Build the mandap: platform, drape and backdrop
The mandap is the little throne-room you create for Bappa. Build it in three layers:
- Platform: raise the idol on a wooden chowki or a sturdy table so it sits slightly above seated eye-level. Cover it with a clean, ironed cloth.
- Drape: pleat a length of silk or satin in an auspicious colour — red, marigold-yellow, orange or green — as the backdrop. A bright saree or dupatta you already own works beautifully and keeps it reusable.
- Backdrop accents: frame the idol with marigold and mango-leaf torans, strings of genda phool, banana stems at the sides (the traditional touch), or a sheer curtain of warm fairy lights behind the drape.
Pick a theme and keep it consistent: traditional floral (marigolds, banana leaves, brass), eco-natural (clay, jute, fresh leaves), royal Rajasthani (rich fabrics, brass diyas and idols), or modern-minimal (a white drape, a little greenery and warm light). Symmetry around the idol — matched diyas or urli on each side — instantly makes the setup look finished.
Light it up: diyas, tealights and akhand jyot
Lighting is what turns a nice arrangement into a magical one. Line the edge of the mandap and your entrance with diyas and tealight holders, keep an akhand jyot (continuous flame) glowing through the festival days, and place a marble lotus urli with floating flowers and tealights on the floor in front of the idol as a centrepiece. Pooja essentials: thali, kalash, bell and modak
Keep the ritual items ready and they double as decoration. A decorative marble meenakari pooja thali holds roli, chandan, akshat, flowers and incense; a larger thali with kalash anchors the aarti; add a bell, a mangal kalash topped with a coconut, and of course Bappa’s favourite modak and laddoo. Offer durva grass and red flowers, and perform aarti morning and evening.
Flowers, rangoli and toran at the entrance
Welcome Ganpati from the doorway. Hang a fresh marigold and mango-leaf toran on the main door, and lay a rangoli at the threshold — coloured powders, or a quick flower-petal rangoli with marigold and rose. A trail of small diyas from the door to the mandap makes Bappa’s arrival feel like a procession.
Eco-friendly and small-space Ganpati
Eco-friendly: choose a natural clay (shadu) idol with natural colours, and immerse it at home in a bucket or drum — then use the clay-rich water for a potted plant. Skip plaster-of-paris and thermocol. The greenest option of all is a permanent resin, brass or marble-dust idol you keep and re-decorate every year, with no immersion at all.
Small flats and balconies: you do not need a big mandap. A 5–6 inch idol on a corner console or a wall shelf, a compact drape, a few tealights and one small urli make an elegant setup. Keep it simple and well-lit and it photographs beautifully.
