A masterclass in ornament, and a pair you arrange a room around.
In Marwar the horse is the mount of kings. The Marwari breed was raised in this desert for the Rathore cavalry, and centuries later it still turns up on palace gates, on wedding processions and above the doorways of the old havelis of Jodhpur. This pair is made in Jodhpur, in our own workshop, and it is finished the way that lineage asks for.
The ornament is the work. Floral and scroll relief runs across the saddle blanket, the chest band and the crupper of both horses, and small coloured studs in blue, green, amber and clear are set into the centre of each flower. The manes and tails are sculpted separately and each bridle is picked out by hand, so no two pieces are exactly alike.
The rearing horse stands about 13 inches tall and the standing horse about 10 inches, each on its own rectangular base. The pair weighs about 1.5 kg together. Two pieces at two heights hold a surface that a single piece would leave looking empty — set them side by side on a console, or split them to either end of a TV unit, a reception counter or an office cabinet.
Why this pair is priced where it is
- Two pieces, not one. A rearing horse and a standing horse, each separately moulded and separately finished. A matched pair is what holds a console or a mantel; a single figure on that scale leaves the surface looking unfinished.
- The ornament is the labour. Relief engraving covers the full body of both horses, and every flower centre is then set with a coloured stone individually. That is what makes the piece read dense and worked rather than plain-cast, and it is where the hours go.
- Hand-finished, not sprayed and shipped. The antique gold is worked so the recesses stay deep and the raised engraving catches the light. Manes, tails and bridles are picked out separately, so no two pieces leave the workshop identical.
- Presence, not a trinket. Thirteen inches at the tallest point and about 1.5 kg across the pair. This is centrepiece scale.
- Straight from the maker. We cast, finish, pack and ship these ourselves from Jodhpur. There is no importer and no distributor margin sitting inside this price.
And what it is not: the stones are jewel-style accents rather than gemstones, and the gold is a finish rather than metal. We would rather say so here than have you discover it at home.
In Indian tradition a horse stands for speed, courage, ambition and forward movement, and a pair is often kept in a living room, a study or a work cabin for that reason. It is a cultural association only, and no result is promised.
